Roofing & Waterproofing in Ajax

Ajax was laid out in the early 1940s as a planned town for the workers at a wartime munitions plant, and the community that grew out of it after the war still defines the south and central neighbourhoods. The streets off Harwood Avenue below the 401 are lined with 1950s and 60s bungalows, storey-and-a-half houses and split-levels, nearly all of them on their second or third roof. Brick chimneys, low rear additions and attics that were never vented to current practice are where most of their roofing and moisture trouble begins.

Above the 401 the town changes character. Westney Heights and the subdivisions reaching up toward Rossland and Taunton Road went in quickly during the building boom of the 1990s and 2000s, often with a whole street roofed by one crew in one season. Lots backing onto the valleys get the tree problems: limbs over the roof, leaves packed into valleys and eavestroughs, and shaded north slopes that stay damp. Beneath much of the town is dense clay till that drains slowly, which is why so many Ajax basements stay dry through August and take water every spring.
